How to Drive Roundabouts Safely: A Learner's Routine

Use signs, lane markings, mirrors, speed and observation to approach and leave UK roundabouts with a repeatable routine.

Plan before the give-way line

Roundabouts become difficult when every decision is delayed. Look for direction signs and lane markings early, identify the exit and choose a suitable lane before traffic pressure increases.

Use a consistent approach

Check mirrors, signal when needed, position correctly and reduce to a speed that gives you time to observe. On reaching the roundabout, give priority to traffic approaching from the right unless signs, markings or signals direct otherwise. Also watch traffic already on the roundabout; another driver's signal may be late or missing.

Keep observing after you enter

Do not focus only on the exit. Maintain a safe position, notice lane markings and check for vehicles that may change lanes. Vulnerable road users can be harder to see, particularly near entries and exits.

Prepare to leave

Use mirrors and signal at the appropriate time so other road users can understand your plan. Keep your road position stable and look for pedestrians near the exit.

Common learner problems

• Approaching too quickly to observe and plan.
• Looking right but not using the information to judge a safe gap.
• Choosing a lane from memory rather than signs and markings.
• Drifting lanes while steering.
• Signalling so early or late that it confuses others.

Practise progressively

Begin with quieter, simpler layouts. Once the routine is stable, add busier traffic, multiple lanes and unfamiliar approaches. The objective is not to memorise one roundabout; it is to apply the same planning process wherever the layout changes.
